Luke's
childhood experiences in the northern mountains, valleys
and coastal regions of California stimulated an enduring
relationship with nature and diversity of the natural world.
An extensive
background of art experience allow an intuitive approach
to transparent watercolor painting. Painting subjects and
travel to painting locations are sometimes inspired by dreams.
Once he arrives to a place he immerses himself in the energy and
qualities of a place. Then as a place or object captures
his senses, he begins a sketch capturing the shapes and
lines.
Often Luke
will precede painting by walking through and touching objects
in the field or by engaging a kinesthetic dance with his
arms and hands as if caressing objects in view. After establishing
the basic composition, he begins painting in the dynamics
of the light, and atmosphere with color. This often involves
sitting in the same place all day. The work becomes increasingly
abstract, methodical and personal as he works to resolve
the watercolor.
Luke has also
created a variety of abstract paintings in his studio, which
include mathematical, mystical, and other themes.
