Mt. Lassen Art Center provides an art school, gallery, and community art activities to serve local and regional citizens, tourists and artists. Our program seeks to engage interest and participation for all ages and levels of art experience. The center was founded at its beautiful location, seven miles west of Mt. Lassen National Volcanic Park, in 2000, by pleinaire artist Howard “Luke” Lucas. Luke returned to his northstate mountain family roots after 32 years as a public school teacher in the Bay Area. His love of natural beauty, artistic expression, and a lifetime commitment to community service and education, have combined to create the Mt. Lassen Art Center.
Free Public Art Education Activities for Children and Adults.
- Paint From the Heart workshops, for children 18 and under, take place Wednesday mornings for six weeks during the summer.
- Paint Free…Be Free, outdoor “happenings”, take place several times a year at various locations. With the goal of encouraging playful and spontaneous exploration with color and paint, adults and children are always welcome, and kids often get their hesitant parents to grab a brush and paint along side them. Annual venues include the Lassen National Park Founders Day, The Salmon Festival at the Coleman National Fish Hatchery, City of Redding Art in the Park, the North Valley Art League Carter House Gallery, the Shingletown Volunteer Fire Department Fun Day, and the Shingletown Peddler’s Fair. Now in its seventh year, Paint Free…Be Free will be celebrating its 50th event this summer.
Art Lessons for individuals and groups, including special needs.
Lessons, with equipment and materials provided, are conducted at our outside facilities overlooking Bailey Creek, or inside our well-equipped studio. Classes are also offered at near by landscape locations such as Lake McCumber and Scharsch Meadow.
Mt. Lassen Art Gallery.
The gallery exhibits fine art by Howard “Luke” Lucas as well as welcoming work by other local and visiting artists, including children.
Thru Watercolor Adventure, individuals, families, and groups of practicing artists can participate in guided, off-site painting excursions into the Southern Cascade wonderland. Locations include stunning views of Brokeoff Meadow, Mt. Lassen, Burney Falls, and Hat Creek Rim Overlook.
Longer events are offered as workshops, one to five days in length, and feature small group (2-20 participants) art instruction. Out of town student accomodations are available at nearby camping and inn facilities. Limited residential facilities are available on-site.
Annual Mt. Lassen Art Show (week end following the Fourth of July)
